Brynje and the mesh shirt

Brynje is a norwegian family business from Larvik who has been world-renowned for its quality, functionality, and durability since 1887.

It all began when Jacob Jacobsen arrived by boat in Larvik and established “J. Jacobsen Trikotasje og Konfeksjon”. In 1921, Henrik Brun from the Lunda farm in Uvdal developed the first mesh/string vest that resembled the historic Viking armour known as “Brynje”. The “Brynje-shirt” or “health shirt”, was developed in collaboration with the Norwegian armed forces. It soon became an essential part of equipment for challenging expeditions to the world’s extremes. When Hillary and Tenzing became the first humans to ascend Mount Everest in 1953, they wore Brynje mesh next to their skin.

Over the years, Brynje has equipped numerous expeditions to the planet’s most hostile environments. Whether it is the highest mountains, the deepest oceans, the coldest poles or the hottest deserts, Brynje’s garments have proven to perform and protect. Today, Brynje’s mesh, wool, and shell clothing are used by polar guides, people in demanding professions, and outdoor enthusiasts. When the Brynje garments handle the toughest places on earth, they will serve you well too.

Nature and social responsibility

Social responsibility, nature and environmental considerations are the basis for all of Brynje's operations. It sits in the backbone of our employees and governs all the small and large decisions we make on a daily basis.

Brynje makes clothes of high quality so that they last as long as possible. The rest is up to you. Wear the clothes for a long time, follow the washing instructions and repair. That's good, both for nature and the wallet.
