She skied a total of 1,130 kilometers and 3,000 meters in altitude - and managed to complete the project before her friend Marianne died of cancer. An important goal for Hege Victoria was to raise money for cancer research.
Hege Victoria was given leave from the police and was in intensive training in addition to a full-time job for two years. She sold her apartment to finance the expedition. Along the way, she was monitored by Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE), which received daily updates from Hege Victoria with information about her position, health, etc. She also had close contact with Norway's No. 1 expedition expert, Lars Ebbesen who works for Ousland Explorers. Ebbesen gave Hege Victoria detailed weather forecasts and together they made plans continuously throughout the expedition. She also received medical advice via satellite phone.
- I have been one of those girls who has been afraid of failing. I was terrified that it wouldn't work, but that was exactly the challenge, to dare to go for the goal, even with the fear that it wouldn't be possible, says Hege Victoria.
