Maria and Kjell Bratteli Jonsson give a lecture in Oslo 27/11/25

We will be visited by authors Maria and Kjell Bratteli Jonsson, who this autumn released the book GLACIER – hiking – rescue – outdoor life. This is a comprehensive and engaging handbook for anyone moving through glacier landscapes, whether in steep icefalls or with sled and tent. There will be an inspiring presentation with a slideshow, stories from the glaciers, and reflections on the writing process behind the book. There will also be a fun Kahoot quiz with a chance to win great prizes from Brynje.

Maria and Kjell Bratteli Jonsson work as instructors and guides in “everything that’s fun,” including river packrafting, mountain climbing, avalanche safety, sea kayaking, canoeing, expedition courses—and of course, they are glacier instructors, just to name a few. This evening, they will be visiting Brynje’s Brandstore in Oslo to talk about glacier hiking, but if you have questions about navigation, dogs on trips, or ice climbing, they’ll likely be happy to answer those too.

The book ISBRE is packed with useful knowledge for both beginners and experienced glacier travelers: from movement techniques on blue ice and snow-covered glaciers, to rope team routines, rescue techniques, knots, and first aid. You’ll also get a deep dive into glacier knowledge, flora and fauna, and the story of how glaciers have gone from being feared natural phenomena to sought-after destinations for nature experiences. The book combines practical outdoor skills with academic depth. It’s based on solid experience from glacier courses and is written with support from glaciologists, mountaineers, mountain course leaders, and geologists—and richly illustrated by Bergljot Hals. The foreword is written by Børge Ousland, who writes:

“Through this book, I hope more people will discover the magic of ice and its enormous significance.”

2025 is the International Year of Glaciers, and it has never been more important to turn our attention to our glaciers. ISBRE is not just a practical guide—it’s also a reminder of everything we risk losing.

The book is published by Fri Flyt and is available for sale in most places. If you’d like a signed copy, you can buy one this evening at Brynje.
