Randulf Valle and Bengt Rotmo: Lecture in Oslo

Randulf Valle and Bengt Rotmo: Lecture in Oslo
Share to

On December 10th, we’ll rerun this inspiring November lecture! In the winter of 2003, Bengt Rotmo and Randulf Valle skied 2,500 kilometers through the Northwest Passage along Canada’s northern coast. When they stood on the shore on the eastern side of Baffin Island a bit too late in June, both were certain they would soon embark on another long journey together. However, life had other plans, and although both continued to go on many trips, their next shared adventure would have to wait.

The Hunt for Adventure – The First Return Journey

In the winter of 2025, the time had finally come for a new long expedition together in the Canadian wilderness. Starting from the forests around Great Slave Lake, they set course for the Inuit settlement of Kugluktuk—the place where their journey through the Northwest Passage began 22 years earlier. The ski trip there covered approximately 800 kilometers.

But even though Kugluktuk was the endpoint of the journey, it wasn’t the true goal. The most important thing was to experience a new wilderness adventure: to embark on a trip where the route was uncertain, where they didn’t know what awaited them, and where the landscape offered constant surprises. Along the way, they would once again come close to the stories that linger in the Arctic terrain. Even deep inland, there are traces of the hunt for the Northwest Passage: one historic expedition mapped vast areas impressively, while another ended with the explorers eating their own shoes, lichen from the rocks—and each other...

Moreover, both looked forward to spending five weeks out there together with a good friend. But how would the team dynamic be after 22 years of rather sporadic contact?
