Laundry tips for firefighters

Cancer in firefighters is linked to exposure to fire smoke containing toxic gases. That’s why it is crucial to take preventive measures! Lejon Kemi has now developed a new specialized detergent and effective washing methods for cleaning firefighters’ clothing and equipment.

Washing Instructions for Brynje Wool Underwear

Preparation

Sort wool underwear separately from other clothing to avoid damage.

Detergent

Use a liquid detergent specifically designed for wool, optimized for removing oily and greasy dirt without damaging the fabric. Lejon Kemi's FPG Wash is a great option, especially for underwear exposed to smoke gases or other contaminants.

Washing Program

Select a wool-wash program on the washing machine. To ensure the longest lifespan, Classic products should be washed at 40°C. If the items are contaminated with soot (from fire smoke), wash them at 60°C with an extra rinse using a specially developed washing program.

Wash Cycle
  • Avoid overloading the washing machine to ensure thorough cleaning.
  • Use a gentle cycle with low spinning speed to protect wool fibers.
Post-Wash Care
  • After washing, lay the wool underwear flat to dry to prevent loss of shape.
  • Avoid using a tumble dryer, as it may damage the wool fibers.
General Tips
  • Wash wool underwear regularly to remove impurities and bodily residues.
  • Always wash underwear after exposure to contaminants.
  • Brynje collaborates with Lejon Kemi, which has partnered with Electrolux and Miele to develop specialized washing programs - these are recommended for the best results.

About Lejon Kemi’s Detergent

Lejon Kemi's detergent, FPG Wash, is specially formulated to remove harmful and cancer-causing substances like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from wool underwear. Reports show that using the detergent in combination with an optimized wash program can reduce PAH levels by 81% to 99%, lowering them to extremely safe levels (with some PAHs remaining at concentrations below 1 mg/kg in textiles). The detergent is carefully developed to be gentle on wool fibers, helping maintain the quality and lifespan of the underwear. This prevents wool from losing its shape or getting damaged during washing.

FPG Wash is optimized to remove oily and greasy residues, commonly found on wool underwear worn by firefighters and chimney sweeps. It ensures thorough cleaning without leaving behind residues. The detergent is designed to work efficiently at 60°C in combination with Lejon Kemi’s optimized wash program—this is the recommended temperature for removing harmful substances and soot from wool underwear. This approach enables deep cleaning without harming the fabric.
